Fujifilm Lens X-Pro1 18mm F2.0 Lens

Review & Description

Best Buy Cameras - The construction is solid. Weighs 187g, not that heavy. Has a 52mm filter thread - great because I share a ND filter with the 18mm lens.

It's nice they included a metal lens hood. The lens hood has its own rubber cap. The viewfinder will be blocked off slightly by the lens hood but not really a source of concern.

With the lens hood on, you can still use the lens cap, which is great, and that's what I use. The lens cap however is a bit too flat, and is difficult to pinch out. I'm contemplating getting a third party lens cap. That's how bad it is.

The aperture ring goes three click for 1 full stop. Having an aperture ring such a great convenience, and one major reason why I bought the X-Pro1. The manual focus ring is well damp. However, part of me also wished that the aperture ring would actually move the aperture physically, rather than acting as just an electronic dial.

The performance of this lens is wonderful. It's sharp wide open. Colours are beautiful and the bokeh is dreamy. There's no vignetting and chromatic aberration. At f/1.4, you get a shallow depth of field that helps you isolate subjects easily. It's meant to be shot wide open, and I'm very satisfied with the photos I've shot so far.

Focus speed is average. Not instant, but also not that slow. AF speed is quick enough for subjects at walking speed. Focusing is noisy so it's definitely going to be recorded when shooting video. There's no internal focus so the front lens element moves.

Manual focus is fly-by-wire, and the implementation on the X-Pro1 isn't perfect. There seems to be a split/quarter second lag between turning the ring and showing up on the EVF. I hope it's fixable by firmware.

Focusing on close subjects is easier with macro mode. The minimum focusing distance is 28cm. It's not true macro, of course.

OVF frame lines coverage on the X-Pro1 is not 100%. This not attributed to the lens design. Photos will be slightly larger than the frame line box. While in OVF, the parallax error and its adjustment is quite significant. So I always shoot close subjects in EVF mode.

There's a tendency for the aperture blades to give off clicking sounds when they are opening and closing. This happens often when the exposure changes. If you're in a noisy environment, it blends into the ambient noise, but you can still hear it slightly. I hope it doesn't have any effect on wear and tear.
